Learning

Artists originally employed in Tbilisi State Academy of Art now in Garikula work on educational program the distinction of which is that students and teachers are regarded as colleagues interacting during creative work. In Garikula it is believed that keeping collegial atmosphere between experienced artists and students, and learning through cooperative creative work gives students maximum time to explore their own angle on creativity.

The art class allows students to work with sources of their artistic motivation, becoming intimate with their personal style through drawing, painting, sculpture, collage and theory courses, as well as use of other media. The end purpose of art class is student’s artistic self-sufficiency and diversification of the creative space.

On every stage the staff is careful to distinguish student’s “technical” mistakes from their search, striving not to comment on the first and to encourage the second.

During employment at A. Kutateladze Tbilisi State Academy of Art, Garikula staff developed a new learning and entry examination program based on following factors: attentive pedagogical practice; tradition of running the Academy during hard Soviet period when it was under threat of close in 1960es, and adding faculties and studios ready to cooperate with socialist academies abroad;  blood ties with key figures of Russian Futurism - an early 20th c avant-garde art movement that revolutionized fonts and book publishing esthetics.
